Sharing QAI’s survey, in partnership with, for our LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities. Take the Survey Our work with communities, a home for People with Disabilities At QC, we are committed to supporting people with disabilities, particularly within our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy (LGBTIQA+SB) communities. Our mission is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive and feel empowered, regardless of their abilities. We understand the unique challenges faced by our community and are dedicated to providing services and resources that enable people living with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Who We Are QC’s Disabilities Work focuses on providing a safe and inclusive space for people with disabilities, especially those who identify as LGBTIQA+SB. We recognise that living with a disability in our LGBTIQA+SB communities brings unique challenges, and we’re here to provide the support, resources, and community connection that can make all the difference. Our services are designed to ensure your voice is heard, your identity is respected, and your life experiences are valued. Our Partnership with QAI (2024–2025) QC was proud to partner with Queensland Advocacy for Inclusion (QAI) throughout 2024–2025 to support and empower LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities living with disabilities. This partnership was built on shared goals to: Understanding our communities: By sharing insights and data, we worked to better address the unique needs and experiences of those living at the intersection of disability, gender, and sexuality. Creating spaces to belong: Together, we ensured our communities had increased access to inclusive, accessible, and welcoming environments. Advocating for change: Through collaboration, we strengthened efforts to break down barriers and shape a future that celebrates diversity and promotes equity. At QC, we believe that intersectionality sits at the heart of belonging. Our partnership with QAI enabled us to take meaningful steps toward a world where everyone felt seen, valued, and supported. Our Past Work: QC ILC Over recent years, our work in this area has been known as QC ILC (Information, Linkages, and Capacity Building), and it was delivered through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). QC ILC focuses on supporting people with disabilities by providing information, fostering connections, and building the capacity of individuals and organisations to create more inclusive services and space for our LGBTIQA+SB communities living with a disability or disabilities. We aimed to bridge gaps in knowledge, services, and resources, helping people access the support they needed and empowering them to live independently. Our ILC work laid the foundation for QC's Disabilities Work today, and we continue to build on that legacy as we expand our services. More to come soon! Meet Our Team Our Disabilities Team at QC is passionate about empowering people with disabilities and creating inclusive spaces for our LGBTIQA+SB communities. Information Learn about local services, activities and supports available at our venues and online About Gayawur Rainbow Gayawur Rainbow is more than just a service—it's a place of belonging. Developed by the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC) in partnership with 2Spirits, Gayawur Rainbow is passionate about creating a welcoming space where everyone - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy (LGBTIQA+SB) individuals and allies alike – feels like they belong, no matter who you are. Gayawur Rainbow offers a wide range of services designed to support the well-being of our LGBTIQA+SB communities, including:  Affirming Care:  A comprehensive approach to healthcare that respects and supports gender identity and sexual orientation.  Mental Health Support:  Peer-led groups, counselling, and resources to help individuals navigate mental health challenges.  Safe Spaces:  Dedicated areas for LGBTIQA+SB individuals to meet, share experiences, and build community.  Peer Networks:  Connecting people in rural and regional areas with trusted community connectors.  The Story Behind the Name: Gayawur Rainbow The name Gayawur Rainbow carries deep significance, reflecting both cultural heritage and the vision of the program. "Gayawur" means "rainbow" in the Ugarapul language, honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their enduring connection to the lands now known as Queensland. The choice of this name not only recognises the vibrant diversity within LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities but also highlights the importance of grounding our work in respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and traditions. Pronounced gay (like sky) - ya - ward (with a short 'r' sound) The word evokes the imagery of a rainbow as a universal symbol of hope, diversity, and inclusion. Just as a rainbow brings together many colours to form something beautiful and unified, Gayawur Rainbow embodies the coming together of diverse experiences and identities to create an affirming, connected, and thriving community.  This name also reflects our commitment to cultural security, ensuring that all our practices, spaces, and services are inclusive, respectful, and safe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. By embedding cultural security into everything we do, we aim to uphold the dignity, identity, and rights of all individuals, creating an environment where LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities can feel valued, supported, and empowered. On our website, the name serves as a beacon, guiding individuals to a space where they can find culturally respectful, inclusive, and empowering support. It reflects the heart of the initiative: creating a brighter, more inclusive future for all through holistic and affirming care. The story of Gayawur Rainbow is woven into every element of our program, from the services we offer to the connections we foster. It is more than just a name - it’s a call to unity, understanding, and celebration of diversity. What We’ve Heard from the Community Through our consultations, we’ve learned that the communities we serve are looking for:  Visible, Accessible Services:  Easy-to-find materials and resources that inform and support individuals in their communities.  Celebrating Our Identities:  Events and spaces where LGBTIQA+SB individuals can express and celebrate who they are.  Welcoming Spaces Across Queensland:  Locations where people can relax, connect, and feel safe.  Our Virtual Online Site Gayawur Rainbow Online Launch Amplifying Voices Connect We invite you to join the Gayawur Rainbow community!
