People Living with HIV Recognising HIV Long-Term Survivors, we honour and celebrate the lives, courage, and advocacy of those who have been living with HIV for decades. Their resilience and determination have paved the way for significant advancements in research, medical treatments, and policy changes, shaping a brighter future for all. Our roots run deep, the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health, formerly the Queensland AIDS Council, was formed in 1984 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The organisation was established to address the urgent need for education, care and support, and advocacy for those affected by HIV/AIDS in Queensland. Along with 2Spirits, QCGP+, the Queensland Council for LGBTI Heath and our allies have worked tirelessly to support and uplift our incredible communities living with HIV over the decades. We pay tribute to the countless stories and immense work that have contributed to the progress we see today. The profound impact of living with HIV on long-term survivors' lives is immense, and we remain committed to supporting them and advocating for their needs, especially as they age. People living with HIV (PLHIV) no longer need to live in fear of having an active sex life. Over time research has evolved and there is now a number of ways PLHIV can protect their sexual partners from contracting HIV. These strategies include: Undetectable viral load Treatment as prevention (TasP) Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) Starting Antiretroviral therapy early and maintaining control of viral load helps prevent the risk of passing on HIV. In other words if someone is HIV+ and has an undetectable viral load it is virtually impossible to pass on the virus. QC is a partner of the Prevention Access Campaign which is a multi-agency health equity initiative to end the dual epidemics of HIV and HIV-related stigma by expanding access to HIV prevention and empowering people with and vulnerable to HIV with accurate and meaningful information about their social, sexual, and reproductive health. Prevention Access Campaign’s Undetectable = Untransmittable ( U=U ) is a community of HIV advocates, activists, researchers, and community partners around the world uniting to clarify and disseminate the revolutionary but largely unknown fact that people living with HIV on effective treatment do not sexually transmit HIV. U=U was launched in early 2016 by a group of people living with HIV who created a groundbreaking consensus statement with global experts to clear up confusion about risk and to clarify the science of U=U. That Statement was the genesis of the U=U movement that is sharing the U=U message to dismantle HIV stigma, improve the lives of people living with HIV, and bring us closer to ending the epidemic. At our core, we believe in promoting wellness, embracing diversity, and enhancing the quality of life for everyone in our communities. Being diagnosed with HIV today is very different from the past thanks to incredible advancements in medical science, care and support. Our approach is centred on helping people living with HIV (PLHIV) live fulfilling and vibrant lives. Immediate treatment upon diagnosis, typically with just one pill a day, plays a vital role in this journey. Adhering to this daily regimen is crucial, as it not only supports individual health but also helps achieve an undetectable viral load. An undetectable viral load means the amount of virus in the body is extremely low, with an undetectable viral load there is zero risk of transmitting HIV to a sexual partner, providing you've been adherent to HIV treatment for at least six months. This milestone is a testament to the advancements in modern medicine and the importance of HIV treatment to support quality of life for people with HIV. Whilst treatment is important to support good quality of life for people with HIV so too is social connection and peer support. Along with our community partners, such as Queensland Positive People (QPP), we are committed to raising awareness, supporting our positive communities and helping you lead a healthy, happy, and connected life. Become a Member For more than 40 years, the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC) has been a home for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities across Queensland. Our story is one of resilience, connection, and collective strength. As a community-led and community-owned organisation, we exist to ensure our communities are visible, valued, and safer, creating places to belong, with health and wellbeing at the centre of everything we do. Complete the online application form Provide your details and choose the membership category that best suits you. Please email info@qc.org.au to get started. 2. Pay the membership fee Payment is required at the time of application for all paid memberships. Our team will be in touch to guide you through it. 3. Your application is submitted for Board approval As required by the QC Constitution, all new members must be formally approved by the QC Board. 4. Receive confirmation of membership Once your application is ratified at the Board meeting, your membership becomes active and you will be notified by email. 5. Renew each year (if applicable) Ordinary, Concession, and Corporate memberships renew annually on 30 June. Applications received between 1 April and 30 June renew the following year. Discover QC's Talking Regions initiative, designed to engage and support LGBTI communities across regional Queensland. Learn about our programs, community engagement, and how we promote health and wellbeing in diverse regions. Talking Regions In 2023, QC conducted consultations right across this land now known as Queensland to hear directly from our communities what matters: being visible, being heard and talking about where they live talking about their regions. Along with publicly available statistics that talk about topics about our communities and the general population, we can place this information side by side. In 2024, we released the document ‘Talking Regions’ to help share this work back. We’ve helped prepare this, and this work is owned by our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities by the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health. Statistics reflect the general population and the latest data available, highlighting our LGBTIQ+ communities and people. Experiences gathered reflect consultations conducted by QC and our communities in 2023, with graphic recordings by Rachel Apelt. We thank all involved for telling your stories. We recognise that the data publicly available for our communities is imperfect and could be better, and there are gaps. We recognise the tireless efforts and work being done to change and improve this. The feedback from our communities is recorded directly from our communities, reflecting the experiences and needs of our communities. About the Project Over the past several years, the QC Disabilities team has led many community programs deeply focused on the intersectionality between disabled and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Asexual, Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities in Queensland. The latest work of the disabilities team is summed up by a simple message, I Exist In Our Communities . The work, led alongside 2Spirits and funded by Mac Cosmetics, aims to give vulnerable members of our community a greater sense of belonging through connection, highlighting ways in which they can exist more healthily and confidently. We will shine the spotlight on members of key community health organisations to assist folk to be as visible as they can within the community. We will showcase these organisations by means of several short recorded conversations in which community members will outline how they best exist and give tips for people to find their happy place within our community. This program showcases LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy community members with lived experience of disability and health access challenges as a means of giving community visibility and representation, which often lacks in this space.A second aim of I Exist is to connect our communities and increase knowledge of their health access and knowledge and link folks softly to health, support and advocacy organisations. Community conversations are a great tool in organically aiding this process. With our Disabilities Team at QC, partners 2Spirits and the QC Disabilities Steering Committee, we aim to increase accessibility, understanding and knowledge of community health access and improve outcomes for our communities, allies, and support people. We commit to working and walking alongside our First Nations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their connection to country as this country’s first people and their ways of knowing, being and doing. In the unique privilege of working alongside 2Spirits, we grow and contribute directly to these ways of working and conversations that take us to new ways of working. Discover QC's Advisory Groups, composed of diverse community leaders and experts who guide our programs and initiatives. Learn how these groups contribute to promoting the health and wellbeing of the LGBTI community in Queensland. Advisory Groups One of the important ways that QC delivers services to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy Queenslanders is with the support of our Advisory and Health Action Groups. The Health Action Groups initiate and facilitate peer education and health promotion to particular areas of our communities with the support of the organisation, and our Advisory Groups provide advice and guidance to the organisation and its work. The 2Spirits Executive Advisory As an organisation we have a responsibility to reflect the diversity of the communities that we serve. A safe, transparent and mutually agreed partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ Sistergirl and Brotherboy Communities of Queensland is an essential part of our work towards achieving this diversity. We acknowledge that as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, you hold the knowledge, strength and cultural practices that create positive, social and emotional wellbeing outcomes. The Transgender, Gender Diverse and Non-Binary Communities Advisory Group aims to provide quality advice to the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC) which reflects the needs of Transgender, Gender Diverse and Non-Binary (TGDNB) communities, to ensure that QC resources, programs and services enhance the health and wellbeing outcomes of TGDNB people in Queensland. The Advisory will do this by providing advice on the strategic directions of Transgender, Gender Diverse and Non-Binary (TGDNB) specific communities health programs, services and resources within QC, and ensure general LGBTIQ Sistergirl and Brotherboy QC activities are inclusive of the needs of TGDNB people. The Advisory Group also leads consultation processes to ensure community voices are captured in a QC TGDNB Communities Health Strategy and also to build the capacity and connections of leaders within the TGDNB communities through Statewide consultation, connection and community development, by creating a Community of Practice within the Advisory Group. Learn about QC's programs and services supporting women and gender-diverse folk within the LGBTI community. Discover our inclusive initiatives aimed at promoting health, wellbeing, and social inclusion in Queensland. Women & Folk Women's Health QC is committed to working and walking alongside all our LGBTIQ+ and women folk. We are looking forward to ways to come together to connect as we continue to consult with our communities for this important work. We're excited to invite you to join us in our initiatives aimed at supporting and empowering women and folk across our LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities. Our efforts recently include conducting surveys and forums, such as cancer screening resources, our women & folk survey, preparations and government health planning, to advocate for better health treatment and outcomes for our sistergirls, women, and folk. We actively engage in discussions around gendered violence, aiming to enact change through both education and legislation, ensuring equal representation for all. One of our key projects, the Yarns Heal suicide prevention project, is underway statewide for the next 12 months. This initiative aims to address difficult issues within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities while also improving education and understanding in both the Community and Health Sectors. To the Sistergirls, Women, and Folk in our lives, your health and well-being matter. We're committed to advocating for change within our health system and communities, emphasising the importance of Gender Identities, Sexual Identities, Culture, and Health. Breast Screening Resources 2Spirits & QC Have You Had Yours Yet? Breast Screening Resources 2Spirits and QC are excited and proud to launch the new health resources on cervical and susu, breast and chest screening for our Queensland communities, which has been two years in development, ‘Have You Had Yours Yet?’ Our Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and South Sea Islander Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities told us there was need to address lack of information and knowledge around screening and diverse bodies and genders in cervix, susu, chest and breast health. We wanted to make sure we got this right and deliver resources for community members who have a cervix, susu, breast and chest to increase their health literacy knowledges. Messages like ‘check them out’, ‘look and feel every month’, ‘LOOK for changes in your susu, breast, chest’ and feel for lumps in your susu, breast, chest’ are messages to help our communities feel empowered and knowledgeable in achieving awareness and health for chest, breast and susu screening. Throughout this process we consulted with community led by Project Officer Rocky Byrne. These resources have been created with and led by community to raise awareness and education to lower the higher rates of deaths from Cervical and susu, breast and chest cancer. We acknowledge and thank Equality Australia for funding this vital project. We extend a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to community members who gave their value time and input in the development of the resources.
