Our Elders & Older People About Our Elders & Older People Celebrating the Legacy: Honouring our LGBTI Older People and Elders in Queensland In the vibrant tapestry of Queensland's diverse LGBTI+ community, the voices and experiences of older individuals form an integral thread, weaving through the rich history and shaping the vibrant present. As the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health, formerly known as the Queensland AIDS Committee, it is our privilege to pay homage to the invaluable contributions and enduring legacy of LGBTI older people and elders in our state. History Importance for our Communities The history of LGBTI older people and elders in Queensland is one of spirit, courage, and perseverance in the face of adversity. From the shadows of discrimination and marginalisation emerged pioneers who fought tirelessly for equality and justice. Their journeys are marked by both triumphs and tribulations, reflecting the broader struggle for LGBTI+ rights in Australia. In the not-so-distant past, Queensland, like much of the world, grappled with institutionalised homophobia and transphobia. Legal barriers, social stigma, and the presence of HIV/AIDS cast a long shadow over the community. Yet, in the face of these challenges, LGBTI older people stood as beacons of hope, advocating for change, fostering solidarity, and nurturing a sense of belonging. Their activism spanned decades, from the early battles for decriminalisation and anti-discrimination laws to the pivotal moments of the HIV/AIDS crisis, where grassroots organisations emerged as lifelines of support and compassion. Through their resilience, they paved the way for progress, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of LGBTI+ rights in Queensland. Today, as we stand on the shoulders of these giants, it is paramount to recognise the importance of LGBTI older people and elders within our communities. They are not just witnesses to history but active participants in shaping our collective future. Their wisdom, lived experiences, and stories are invaluable treasures, enriching the fabric of our community and providing guidance for the generations to come. Moreover, LGBTI older people and elders serve as living embodiments of resilience and strength, inspiring us to continue the fight for equality and social justice. Their presence reminds us of the progress we have made and the challenges that lie ahead. By honouring their contributions, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all. The Queensland Council for LGBTI Health celebrates the remarkable legacy of LGBTI older people and elders in Queensland. Their courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice have left an indelible mark on our community. As we move forward, let us cherish and learn from their stories, ensuring that their contributions are recognised, valued, and honoured for generations to come. Together, we will continue to build a future where every individual, regardless of age, gender identity, or sexual orientation, can thrive and live authentically. We continue to walk alongside our LGBTIQ+SB communities towards increasing education on sexual health and wellbeing, HIV and STIs, reducing stigma and supporting our people and communities living and ageing with HIV. People living with HIV (PLHIV) no longer need to live in fear of having an active sex life. Over time research has evolved and there is now a number of ways PLHIV can protect their sexual partners from contracting HIV. These strategies include: Undetectable viral load Treatment as prevention (TasP) Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) Starting Antiretroviral therapy early and maintaining control of viral load helps prevent the risk of passing on HIV. In other words if someone is HIV+ and has an undetectable viral load it is virtually impossible to pass on the virus. QC is a partner of the Prevention Access Campaign which is a multi-agency health equity initiative to end the dual epidemics of HIV and HIV-related stigma by expanding access to HIV prevention and empowering people with and vulnerable to HIV with accurate and meaningful information about their social, sexual, and reproductive health. Prevention Access Campaign’s Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U ) is a community of HIV advocates, activists, researchers, and community partners around the world uniting to clarify and disseminate the revolutionary but largely unknown fact that people living with HIV on effective treatment do not sexually transmit HIV. U=U was launched in early 2016 by a group of people living with HIV who created a groundbreaking consensus statement with global experts to clear up confusion about risk and to clarify the science of U=U. That Statement was the genesis of the U=U movement that is sharing the U=U message to dismantle HIV stigma, improve the lives of people living with HIV, and bring us closer to ending the epidemic. HIV is mostly passed on during anal sex when no protection is used. *Undetectable viral load: A HIV viral load is how the amount of HIV is measured in a person’s blood. This is done by means of a viral load test. Each person living with HIV has different levels of HIV in their blood. Effective HIV treatment can significantly reduce a person’s viral load to a point where it is classed as undetectable. *Dam: A dam is a square piece of stretchy latex and works by acting as a barrier during oral sex. Wrapped 'N Ready offers free condoms and dental dams in Queensland. Order online, promote safe sex, and arrange bulk orders for events. Funded by Queensland Health. Wrapped 'N Ready QC has a condom program called Wrapped 'N Ready (or wnr), which allows individuals and organisations in Queensland to order condoms and dams online. Our free Wrapped 'N Ready condoms are available in a bigger and regular fit with water-based lubrication sachets. Dams are also available. Organisations wishing to order bulk resource supplies for an event are invited to send an email to wnr@qc.org.au four (4) weeks prior to the event to allow for processing. - Shigella (Shigellosis) Information & Prevention | QC - Queensland Council for LGBTI Health
Learn about Shigella, its symptoms, risks for Gay & Bi men, transmission, testing & prevention. Stay informed & safe with tips from QC’s sexual health team. Shigella What is Shigella? Shigella (Shigellosis) is a common diarrhoeal disease caused by a group of bacteria called Shigella. Gay, Bi men and any men who have sex with men are at greater risk of getting Shigella. Drug resistant Shigella is increasing in Queensland and elsewhere. People living with HIV can have more serious or prolonged Shigellosis illness. Symptoms Diarrhoea (sometimes bloody) Fever Vomiting Abdominal pain Tenesmus (an uncomfortable sensation of wanting to empty the bowels, when the bowels are empty). Symptoms usually start 1 - 2 days after exposure, but may range from 12 hours to one week. Transmission Issues for Men Who Have Sex with Men When faecal matter (poo) that is infected with Shigella comes in contact with your mouth Fisting Sharing sex toys Rimming (licking bum) Anal & oral sex Prevention Wash your hands well with soapy warm water after handling used condoms, sex toys & after having sex as well as after using the toilet. Avoid touching your mouth during sex. Use dams for rimming (A thin sheet of latex used as a barrier during oral sex to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by creating a barrier between the mouth and the partner's genitals or bum). Don’t have sex until you are no longer infectious. This is usually one week after symptoms resolve. If you have drug-resistant Shigella, you should also have a stool sample that shows you no longer have Shigella infection. Testing A doctor or health care provider can test your stool (poo) to determine if you are infected with Shigella. Treatment If you have a severe infection, you may require antibiotics. Please speak with your doctor. Drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration. If you notice symptoms, avoid sexual contact until you have seen a doctor and a week has passed since you last had symptoms. If tests show you have drug-resistant Shigella, don’t have sex until at least 1 week after symptoms resolve and you have one stool sample confirming you no longer have shigella infection. If you work in the health care, aged care or child care sector; or food preparation and handling sector, seek further information from your doctor.
